Erie, PA – Pennsylvania State Police are seeking new leads in the decades-old homicide of 23-year-old Karen Marie Hufnagel and are offering a $5,000 reward for information that could help solve the case.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police Erie Station, the case stems from an incident on April 13, 1977, when a fire was reported around 10:10 p.m. at Hufnagel’s mobile home along State Route 99 in Washington Township, just south of Edinboro. When the Edinboro Fire Department arrived, Hufnagel was found unconscious but still breathing in the front yard of her residence.

Investigators later learned that Hufnagel had been shot in the head. She was transported to Saint Vincent Hospital in Erie, where she died at 10:53 p.m. that same night.

Hufnagel, a 1971 graduate of Norwin High School, had attended Edinboro State College until 1973. At the time of her death, she was employed as a cashier at Ken’s Pharmacy in Cambridge Springs and had previously worked at the Riverside Inn and the Evergreen Tavern in Edinboro.

State police said they are continuing to use available resources to pursue the unsolved homicide. Officials are urging anyone with information to come forward, noting that even small details could help move the investigation forward.
