Pittsburgh, PA – Drivers across western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, and northern West Virginia are urged to prepare for slick conditions Wednesday evening as temperatures dip below freezing. The National Weather Service has issued several Special Weather Statements warning of potential icy roads through the evening and overnight commute.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Pittsburgh, Wilmington, and Charleston, lingering moisture from recent snowfall and snowmelt will refreeze as temperatures fall into the 20s and teens. Even light snow showers could worsen travel conditions late Wednesday into early Thursday morning.
The advisory covers much of the Ohio Valley and Appalachian ridges, including Pittsburgh, Morgantown, Wheeling, Steubenville, and New Philadelphia. Officials caution that bridges, overpasses, and untreated secondary roads will be most prone to black ice formation.
In Ohio, forecasters expect light snow after midnight, with less than an inch of accumulation possible but rapid freezing likely on untreated surfaces. In West Virginia and western Pennsylvania, icy spots are expected to persist into the Thursday morning commute.
Motorists are advised to reduce speed and allow extra travel time, particularly in elevated or rural areas.
