Scranton, Pennsylvania – Drivers across northeast Pennsylvania and the Southern Tier of New York have hours to prepare as snow and freezing rain move in by 7 a.m. Tuesday, threatening both the morning and evening commutes.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday for Steuben County in New York and Bradford, Susquehanna, Wyoming, Lackawanna and Luzerne counties in Pennsylvania. Snow totals will stay near 1 inch or less, but a light glaze of ice could create slick travel, especially during the early hours.

Interstate 81 through Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, Interstate 86 near Corning and Route 6 across northern Pennsylvania may see reduced traction through midday. After an initial burst of snow and freezing rain, valley locations are expected to warm into the mid-30s Tuesday afternoon. Higher elevations near Montrose, Hazleton and Tunkhannock could remain near freezing longer, allowing icy patches to persist.

PennDOT and NYSDOT urge drivers to slow down and check 511 services for real-time road conditions. Sidewalks, stairs and untreated parking lots may also become slippery.

The advisory expires at 7 p.m. Tuesday, but additional updates could follow if colder air lingers over higher terrain.
