Pennsylvania – Wind scrapes across empty sidewalks and dry pavement cracks under biting cold, but conditions are already shifting. Clouds thicken and moisture moves north, setting the stage for a high-impact winter storm that will rapidly change how the region feels and moves.
According to the National Weather Service office in Mount Holly, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through mid-morning, with wind chills as low as six below zero. A Winter Storm Warning follows, beginning Sunday evening and lasting into Monday afternoon. Snow, sleet, and freezing rain are expected, with total snow and sleet accumulations between seven and 13 inches across parts of southeastern Pennsylvania and central to southern New Jersey.
In Philadelphia, snow develops Sunday morning and intensifies by afternoon. Periods of sleet and freezing rain may mix in, especially south and east of the city. Ice accumulation up to three-tenths of an inch could weigh down trees and power lines. Gusty northeast winds will lower visibility and push blowing snow across open stretches of I-95, I-76, and the Schuylkill Expressway.
Travel conditions may deteriorate quickly Sunday evening and remain hazardous into Monday morning. Even brief melting during daylight hours could lead to flash freezing once temperatures fall again. Drivers should plan extra time, slow down, and consider delaying non-essential trips. Keep an emergency kit ready if travel is unavoidable.
Cold air lingers into midweek. NOAA’s longer-range outlook points to below-normal temperatures holding across the Mid-Atlantic, while precipitation chances drop later next week.
