Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – A steady mid-January winter pattern is expected to continue across Pennsylvania and New Jersey beginning Thursday, bringing temperatures typical for this point in the season along with periodic chances for snow through the following Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, the region is expected to remain in a familiar winter setup during the Jan. 15–21 period, without signals for extreme cold or extended mild stretches. Cold air will be present often enough to support snow when weather systems move through, especially overnight and during the early morning hours.

In Pennsylvania, western and central portions of the state, including Pittsburgh, State College, and Altoona, are more likely to see accumulating snow with passing systems. Elevation and colder overnight temperatures could allow snow to linger on untreated roads, impacting travel along Interstate 80, Interstate 76, and Interstate 99 at times. Eastern Pennsylvania, including Philadelphia, Allentown, and Reading, may also see snow opportunities, particularly if colder air is in place ahead of approaching systems.

Across New Jersey, inland areas such as Sussex, Morris, and Warren counties face the highest chance for snow during this period. Slick travel conditions may develop along Interstate 80, Interstate 78, and Route 206 during active snow windows. Farther south and along the coast, including Newark, Trenton, and Atlantic City, snow remains possible, though precipitation type may vary depending on timing and coastal influence. Even light snow could create slippery conditions on bridges and elevated roadways along the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, and Interstate 95.

While no major winter storms are indicated at this time, the ongoing winter pattern means residents should remain prepared for changing travel conditions. Allowing extra commute time, monitoring daily updates, and keeping vehicles winter-ready is advised.

Additional short-term advisories may be issued as individual systems approach, with more updates expected as the Jan. 15–21 period continues to take shape across Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
