Philadelphia, PA – Sweltering heat and a risk of severe storms are hitting the region hard today, with heat index values soaring above 100° and isolated thunderstorms expected between 2 and 9 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, a broad swath of southeastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and northern Delaware will feel dangerously high apparent temperatures, topping out at 105° in Reading, 103° in Philadelphia, and 101° in Dover. A Marginal Risk (Level 1) for severe thunderstorms is in effect, particularly northwest of the I-95 corridor. The main concern is damaging wind gusts.

Allentown, Trenton, Vineland, and Toms River are also seeing heat indices above 102°, compounding stress for residents, especially those without air conditioning. In response, cooling centers are open in multiple cities. Residents are urged to stay indoors, hydrate frequently, and limit outdoor activity.

Scattered afternoon storms may bring brief downpours and gusty winds, though only a 20–30% chance of severe development is expected. These conditions follow a similar pattern to Tuesday’s oppressive heat.

Another round of stronger storms is expected Thursday afternoon, along with the risk of flash flooding.

⚠️ Heat Advisories remain in effect through this evening. More storms possible Thursday.
