Pittsburgh, PA – Residents across northwestern Pennsylvania are bracing for hazardous travel conditions as freezing rain and ice accumulation threaten roads Sunday morning. Areas along I-80 and in higher elevations are at heightened risk for slick surfaces.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, light freezing rain is expected to begin as early as 8 a.m. Sunday in Butler, Clarion, and Armstrong counties. Temperatures will hover around freezing, increasing the likelihood of ice forming on untreated roads, bridges, and sidewalks. Drivers are urged to use extreme caution, especially during peak travel hours.

Accumulations are forecast to range between 0.10 and 0.25 inches, with isolated areas in the northern Allegheny Mountains seeing higher totals. Officials warn that even a light glaze of ice can make driving treacherous, particularly along I-80 and other elevated highways.

The freezing rain is expected to transition to rain by early afternoon as temperatures rise above freezing. However, conditions could remain hazardous through Sunday evening, particularly in shaded or less-traveled areas.

The five-day forecast for Pittsburgh shows milder conditions following Sunday’s ice storm. Monday will bring steady rain with highs in the low 40s, clearing out by Tuesday. The middle of the week will see partly sunny skies and highs near 47, offering a brief respite from winter weather.

Residents should monitor weather updates and prepare for possible delays or disruptions. Visit weather.gov/pittsburgh for the latest forecasts and road conditions.
