Pittsburgh, Pa. – Air conditioners will be running overtime across western Pennsylvania as an Extreme Heat Warning takes effect from 11 a.m. Sunday through 8 p.m. Wednesday, with heat index values climbing as high as 105°F.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, residents in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Washington, and Westmoreland counties should prepare for prolonged, oppressive heat that could lead to serious health risks—especially for older adults, outdoor workers, and those without access to air conditioning.

Cities including Pittsburgh, Uniontown, Monaca, and Greensburg are expected to see multiple days where the combination of high temperatures and humidity will create dangerous conditions. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration urges anyone working outdoors to take frequent breaks in shade or air conditioning and remain hydrated.

Cooling centers are being opened across the region, and officials recommend checking on vulnerable neighbors and avoiding strenuous activity during peak afternoon hours.

This is the region’s first major heat wave of the summer, echoing a similar June event in 2022 that strained local power grids and emergency services.

The warning remains in effect through Wednesday evening, with additional alerts possible if conditions worsen.
