Philadelphia, PA – A dangerous heat wave will grip the Philadelphia metro area beginning Wednesday morning, with heat index values approaching 98° and heightened risk of heat-related illness through Thursday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, a Heat Advisory is now in effect from 11 a.m. Wednesday to 8 p.m. Thursday for Philadelphia, Delaware, and surrounding New Jersey and Delaware counties. The advisory includes cities like Wilmington, Cherry Hill, Glassboro, Camden, and Mount Holly.

Daytime highs combined with oppressive humidity could strain outdoor workers, vulnerable residents, and anyone without access to air conditioning. Officials urge residents to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, check on elderly neighbors, and avoid strenuous activity during the heat of the day.

Public cooling centers will be open in Philadelphia and Camden. SEPTA and PATCO riders should expect slower service due to rail heat restrictions. Schools still in session may modify outdoor activities or dismiss early.

The heat advisory covers New Castle County in Delaware, Camden, Gloucester, and northwestern Burlington in New Jersey, and Philadelphia and Delaware counties in Pennsylvania.

Warnings remain in effect through Thursday night. Another advisory could be issued if temperatures remain elevated into Friday.
