Pittsburgh, PA – Extreme heat could grip Western Pennsylvania and parts of Eastern Ohio starting Sunday morning, with heat index values climbing past 105°F in cities like Pittsburgh, Wheeling, and Zanesville through Wednesday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, an Extreme Heat Watch is in effect from 11 a.m. Sunday until 8 p.m. Wednesday for the entire region. The alert spans multiple counties, including Allegheny, Beaver, Washington, and Westmoreland, with maximum heat index readings ranging from 100°F to 110°F during peak afternoon hours.

Residents are urged to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, limit strenuous outdoor activities, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Emergency officials warn that prolonged exposure could lead to heat stroke or death—especially in areas without reliable air conditioning. Cooling centers and hydration resources are being coordinated at the county level.

Pittsburgh is projected to see heat index values near 106°F on Tuesday and Wednesday, while Zanesville, OH, and Wheeling, WV, may spike to 109°F. This marks the region’s longest heat event of the year so far.

Warnings remain in effect through Wednesday, with the potential for additional advisories if the heat wave extends into late next week.
