Harrisburg, Pa. – Thunderstorms capable of dumping up to 5 inches of rain could trigger flash flooding across central Pennsylvania beginning Thursday afternoon, prompting a Flood Watch for more than a dozen counties, including Harrisburg, York, and Lancaster.

According to the National Weather Service in State College, the Flood Watch begins at 2 p.m. Thursday and remains in effect through 6 a.m. Friday. Forecasters warn that storms could produce rainfall rates exceeding 2 inches per hour, with total amounts of 2 to 3 inches expected and isolated areas seeing even higher totals.

Flood-prone locations like creeks, streams, and underpasses are most at risk, especially in low-lying urban areas with poor drainage. Counties included in the watch span from Franklin and Perry to Columbia and Schuylkill, covering cities such as Gettysburg, Carlisle, Lebanon, and Williamsport.

Residents are urged to avoid travel during heavy downpours, secure outdoor belongings, and monitor local alerts in case Flash Flood Warnings are issued. Motorists should never drive through flooded roads.

The Flood Watch remains active through late Thursday night, with additional watches or warnings possible as the system develops.
