Harrisburg, Pennsylvania – Steady downpours and slow-moving thunderstorms are drenching central Pennsylvania, prompting a Flood Watch for more than 30 counties—including Harrisburg, Lancaster, and Altoona—through late Sunday night.

According to the National Weather Service in State College, flash flooding is possible until at least 1 a.m. Monday as intense rain falls on already saturated ground. The watch covers key areas such as Cumberland, Dauphin, York, Cambria, and Lycoming counties, with rainfall rates topping 1 to 2 inches per hour in some storms.

Drivers on I-81, Route 30, and local roads should expect rapid water rise on creeks and streams, especially in low-lying or urban areas prone to poor drainage. Emergency crews are on alert for flooded basements, closed roadways, and fast-changing conditions. Residents in Gettysburg, Williamsport, and Johnstown should charge cell phones, avoid unnecessary travel, and be ready to move to higher ground if warnings are issued.

This marks the second major rainfall event in the region this month—mirroring July 2021’s widespread flooding. Officials urge residents to monitor alerts and avoid driving through water-covered roads.

The Flood Watch remains active through late tonight. Additional warnings may be issued if storms intensify or shift.
