Bedford, Pa. – Rising water levels could threaten parts of Bedford and Somerset counties through 10 p.m. Wednesday as storms move across already saturated ground.
According to the National Weather Service office in State College, with updates issued by NWS Binghamton, a Flood Watch is in effect for both counties. Heavy rainfall from Tuesday left soils soaked, and any additional thunderstorms today could cause quick runoff into low-lying areas, streams, and rivers.
Creeks and small waterways are most at risk. Roads with poor drainage and low-water crossings near towns like Somerset, Bedford, and Berlin could flood with little notice. Emergency management officials urge residents in flood-prone zones to remain alert and have a plan in place.
If water begins covering roads, drivers are reminded to turn around, don’t drown. Avoid non-essential travel through rural backroads where flooding is harder to spot.
This is the first significant flood threat of May in this region, and more rainfall is possible into the evening. Additional alerts or warnings may follow if rainfall rates increase. Flood Watch remains in effect until 10 p.m. tonight.
