Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Dry air and increasing winds are creating a heightened risk for brush fires across western Pennsylvania today, especially during the afternoon hours when conditions peak.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, relative humidity levels are expected to drop as low as 27 to 30 percent across much of the region, including Allegheny, Washington, and Westmoreland counties. Combined with breezy conditions, this creates an environment where fires can ignite and spread more easily, even if the overall risk level remains classified as marginal.
The lowest humidity values will stretch from Pittsburgh south toward Morgantown and east into areas like Uniontown and Latrobe. Fine fuels such as dry grass, leaves, and brush are especially susceptible to catching fire under these conditions. Any ignition source, including discarded cigarettes or outdoor equipment, could lead to a rapidly spreading brush fire.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and use caution with any activity that could produce sparks. Securing trailer chains, properly disposing of smoking materials, and delaying debris burning are key steps to reduce risk.
Conditions will improve later this evening as humidity levels recover, but fire officials warn that similar setups could return if dry weather persists.
