Pennsylvania – The sun feels mild now, but that calm will vanish as thick snow bands sweep into Philadelphia by Sunday afternoon. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 7 a.m. Sunday through 6 p.m. Monday, and travel could grind to a halt by early Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, 10 to 16 inches of snow are expected across parts of southeast Pennsylvania, including Philadelphia. Winds may gust as high as 40 mph. Snowfall rates could exceed 2 inches per hour Sunday night, leading to blowing and drifting snow.
Philadelphia International Airport reports 36 degrees late this morning under fog and mist. Highs reach near 48 today before colder air presses in. Snow develops Sunday, possibly mixing with rain early, then becomes all snow by late afternoon. Roads may turn slushy quickly after 4 p.m. Plan errands early and avoid unnecessary travel Sunday night.
Heavy snow continues into Monday with patchy blowing snow before 1 p.m. An additional 2 to 4 inches may fall Monday, compounding totals. I-95, I-76 and the Schuylkill Expressway could see near-whiteout conditions at times. Winds will create drifting on open roadways and bridges.
By Monday night, skies partially clear and temperatures drop into the mid-20s. Watch for flash freezing where snow melts during the day and refreezes after dark. Black ice may linger into Tuesday morning.
Sunshine returns Tuesday with highs near 32. Temperatures rebound into the upper 30s Wednesday and 40s late week. Longer-range trends hint at above-normal readings next week, offering early spring warmth after this burst of winter vengeance.
