Harrisburg, PA – Pennsylvania residents will have the opportunity to safely dispose of old and unused prescription medications this Saturday, October 25, as part of the nationwide DEA National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.
According to the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) and the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP), more than 900 take-back sites across the Commonwealth will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Collection points include police departments, municipal buildings, and select pharmacies.
The initiative is aimed at preventing prescription drug misuse, accidental poisonings, and environmental contamination. “Keeping unused opioids or other medications at home can increase the risk of misuse,” DDAP officials said. “Proper disposal helps keep our communities safe.”
Acceptable items include over-the-counter medications, prescription pills, patches, ointments, vitamins, and pet medicines. Items not accepted include hydrogen peroxide, aerosol inhalers, thermometers, and illicit drugs. Participants are encouraged to keep medications in sealed containers or zip-lock bags, with any personal information removed or obscured.
Nearby Harrisburg locations include the Pennsylvania Capitol Police—Capitol East Wing and Lower Paxton Township Police Department, both accepting drop-offs during event hours.
Residents can find their nearest collection site at takebackday.dea.gov.
