Pittsburgh, PA – An early winter blast is on track to hit Pennsylvania from November 28–30, bringing heavy snow, gusty winds, and dangerous travel conditions through Black Friday weekend. The setup could deliver intense lake-effect and system-driven snow, particularly across western and northern parts of the state.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Pittsburgh and State College, a moderate risk of heavy snow exists across the Great Lakes region, including northwestern and western Pennsylvania. Cold Arctic air moving in behind Thanksgiving’s front will flow over the still-warm waters of Lake Erie, fueling snow bands capable of producing 6–12 inches in the northwest and 3–6 inches across interior western counties. Pittsburgh could see light accumulations, while heavier snow targets areas north toward Butler, Clarion, and Erie.

According to PennDOT, hazardous travel is expected along I-79, I-80, and I-90 late Friday into Saturday, with periods of near-zero visibility in heavier bursts. Winds of 25–35 mph could cause blowing snow and reduced visibility, creating whiteout conditions at times. Travelers should delay unnecessary trips, pack emergency supplies, and use extreme caution on untreated roads.

Cold air will lock in through Sunday, with highs only in the 20s and 30s and overnight lows in the teens. Residents are urged to prepare for bitter wind chills and protect outdoor plumbing and pets through early next week.
