Pendleton and much of eastern Oregon will trade hazy late September skies for a wetter, cooler pattern beginning Monday. Drivers on I-84 and local highways should prepare for reduced visibility this weekend, followed by slicker road conditions early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, widespread haze will persist through Sunday with daytime highs reaching the low to mid-80s. By Monday, clouds increase and a 20 percent chance of rain arrives by late morning. That chance grows to 30 percent Tuesday and 50 percent by Tuesday night into Wednesday.

The haze, caused by lingering smoke and stagnant air, continues to affect air quality across Umatilla County and nearby communities. Health officials advise limiting outdoor activity, especially for sensitive groups, until winds shift with the approaching system.

Drivers should plan for slower travel on I-84 from Pendleton to La Grande once the showers develop. Wet pavement, mixed with dust and residue from the recent dry spell, could create slick spots. Travelers heading west toward Portland should also expect changing conditions by Tuesday.

Temperatures will fall as the pattern changes, dropping from highs near 84 Sunday to the low 70s by midweek. The transition marks a seasonal shift, with October beginning Wednesday under cooler, unsettled skies. Residents are urged to keep rain gear handy and allow extra time for commutes.

More showers are possible late week as the fall pattern sets in. Weather alerts remain possible if rain bands strengthen.
