Pendleton, OR – Brief but intense snow squalls may create sudden whiteout conditions across parts of eastern Oregon and southeast Washington today, impacting major highways including Interstate 84.
According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, atmospheric conditions are supportive of snow squalls capable of producing short bursts of heavy snow, gusty winds, and sharply reduced visibility. These squalls typically last 30 to 60 minutes but can rapidly deteriorate road conditions.
Impacted corridors may include I-84 near Pendleton, La Grande, and Baker City, as well as stretches of U.S. Highway 395 and U.S. Highway 12. Drivers could encounter sudden transitions from clear pavement to snow-covered roads within minutes.
Snow squalls are known for their rapid onset and brief duration. During the heaviest bursts, visibility can drop to near zero, creating dangerous travel conditions. Wind gusts accompanying squalls may further reduce visibility by blowing snow across open roadways.
The Weather Service notes that snow squall warnings are issued when a squall is occurring or imminent and may trigger Wireless Emergency Alerts on mobile devices.
Motorists are advised to slow down immediately if entering a snow squall, avoid sudden braking, and allow extra following distance. If possible, delaying travel until squalls pass may reduce risk.
Commuters and commercial drivers along I-84 should remain alert for rapidly changing conditions throughout the day.
