PENDLETON, OR – Thunderstorm chances are increasing across eastern Oregon Wednesday, marking the first potential storm activity of the season and bringing the risk of gusty outflow winds and periods of rain.
According to the US National Weather Service Pendleton office, widespread but generally low probabilities of thunderstorms are expected through the day and into the evening. While coverage may remain scattered, storms that develop could produce brief heavy rainfall and sudden wind gusts.
The highest chances for thunderstorm development are expected across southeastern and eastern portions of the region, including areas near Pendleton, La Grande, Baker City, and Ontario. Travel along key corridors such as I-84 and US-395 may be impacted by rapidly changing conditions, including slick roads and sudden crosswinds.
According to the National Weather Service, these storms are not expected to be widespread severe events, but localized impacts may still occur, particularly where storms briefly intensify. Gusty outflow winds could create hazardous driving conditions, especially in open areas.
Residents are encouraged to remain weather-aware through the evening and be prepared for brief downpours and lightning. Outdoor plans may be disrupted by quickly developing cells.
Drivers should watch for reduced visibility and changing road conditions, especially during late afternoon and evening travel periods.
This development may be particularly relevant for commuters, agricultural workers, and those traveling long distances across eastern Oregon.
