Pendleton, Oregon – A High Wind Watch signals gusts up to 60 mph across northeast Oregon this weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, the watch covers the Grande Ronde Valley and the foothills of the Northern Blue Mountains from Saturday evening through Sunday evening.
Forecasters say sustained south to southeast winds of 40 to 45 mph are possible, with gusts reaching up to 60 mph. The strongest winds are expected Saturday night into Sunday, though exact peak timing may shift as the system approaches.
Travel along I-84 through La Grande and Baker City, as well as US-30 and OR-11, could become hazardous, especially for high-profile vehicles. Blowing debris, difficult crosswinds, and isolated tree damage are possible in exposed areas.
The Weather Service classifies the overall wind risk as moderate, noting that unsecured outdoor objects may be blown around and sporadic power outages could occur if stronger gusts materialize.
Drivers are advised to use extra caution on elevated roadways and open stretches of interstate where crosswinds are strongest. Those with weekend travel plans are encouraged to check updated forecasts and road conditions before departing.
The timing may be especially relevant for students and weekend commuters traveling along I-84 between Pendleton and La Grande.
A watch means conditions are favorable for high winds, but confidence in exact speeds and impacts will continue to be refined. Additional updates, including potential upgrades to a High Wind Warning, may be issued if forecast confidence increases.
