Boise, ID – Idaho State Police announced today that a 35-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a 2022 double homicide in New Plymouth, marking a major development in a case that has remained unresolved for more than three years.
According to Idaho State Police, Joshua M. Kirkman was taken into custody on murder charges tied to the May 14, 2022, shooting deaths of Eric Ortega and Megan Amaya at a residence on Ada Road. Investigators said the suspect and victims allegedly knew one another prior to the killings.
Police reported that Kirkman allegedly fled from Malheur County deputies shortly after the crime, discarding a pistol into a canal during the pursuit. That firearm was later recovered and forensically confirmed as the weapon used in the double homicide, officials said. Despite physical evidence and multiple witnesses placing him at the home on several occasions, Kirkman allegedly denied knowing the victims.
“These families have waited a long time for accountability in this case,” District 3 Captain Mike Winans said. He noted that the multi-agency investigation required extensive review of video evidence, interviews, and evidence recovery before an arrest could be made.
Investigators also said new witness information indicates that additional suspects were involved, and further charges may be possible as the case continues. ISP is coordinating with prosecutors in both Idaho and Oregon as the investigation remains active.
The Payette County Sheriff’s Office, Malheur County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, and prosecutors from both states assisted in the case.
All involved are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
