Caribou, ME – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect today through early Monday morning across central and northern Maine. Residents should prepare for freezing rain that could create slick surfaces and dangerous travel conditions. Ice accumulations up to two-tenths of an inch are expected, especially in the Saint John Valley.

According to the National Weather Service, freezing rain will develop this afternoon, with precipitation intensifying overnight. Temperatures will rise into the upper 40s by Monday, transitioning freezing rain into plain rain. Slick roads, including sections of I-95, are a primary concern for drivers. Residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel and use caution if driving cannot be postponed.

Monday’s forecast includes heavy rain after 10 a.m., with gusty winds of up to 25 mph. Areas prone to pooling water may experience localized flooding. As temperatures remain above freezing, patchy fog is likely to develop, reducing visibility further.

Looking ahead, conditions will remain unsettled. Tuesday will see mostly cloudy skies and highs in the lower 40s, offering a brief reprieve. By New Year’s Day, another storm system could bring rain and snow, particularly in northern Maine. The midweek period is projected to see colder temperatures and accumulating snowfall, with Thursday bringing a mix of rain and snow throughout the region.

Residents should monitor local forecasts and prepare for changing conditions, especially if traveling during the holiday week. Visit weather.gov for detailed updates and road conditions.
