Parkersburg, WV – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday for portions of southeast Ohio, northeast Kentucky, and northern and western West Virginia, including communities directly along the Ohio–West Virginia border, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston. A light glaze of ice is expected from a brief period of freezing rain early Tuesday morning, creating hazardous travel conditions during the peak commute.

According to NWS Charleston, total ice accumulation will remain light—generally a thin glaze—but even minimal icing can make roads, bridges, and sidewalks extremely slick. Areas more prone to cold air drainage, such as valleys and low-lying communities, may experience freezing rain the longest before temperatures rise above freezing later in the morning.

The advisory affects several key border counties, including Athens, Meigs, Gallia, Jackson, Vinton, Morgan, and Washington in Ohio, as well as Wood, Mason, Cabell, and nearby counties in West Virginia. Cities such as Parkersburg, Athens, Gallipolis, Pomeroy, Ironton, Point Pleasant, and Huntington are within the impacted area.

Freezing rain is expected to begin shortly after sunrise, with the highest impacts between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. Conditions should improve quickly as temperatures warm, transitioning all precipitation to plain rain by late morning.

NWS officials emphasize the risk to early travelers, noting that bridges and overpasses will ice first. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping time, and use extreme caution. Checking road conditions via 511 services and monitoring local updates is strongly encouraged.

While the freezing rain threat is brief, the timing poses a significant hazard for morning commuters across the Mid-Ohio Valley and the WV–Ohio border region.
