Amarillo, Texas – The Texas Panhandle will experience its coolest day of the week Sunday before a significant warmup builds toward Christmas.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, highs Sunday are expected to range from the mid-50s to lower 60s across the region, following the passage of a cold front Saturday. Even with the cooldown, temperatures will still run 5 to 10 degrees above normal for late December.

Forecasters said Sunday will be the coolest day of the upcoming week, with temperatures steadily climbing beginning Monday. By midweek, daytime highs are expected to challenge or potentially break daily record highs across portions of the Panhandle.

Cities including Amarillo, Dalhart, Borger, and Pampa are forecast to see highs well above seasonal averages through Christmas. The average high temperature for Amarillo in late December is near 51 degrees, highlighting the magnitude of the warm pattern.

Additional forecast details show highs around 62 degrees at Palo Duro Canyon on Sunday, with warmer readings expected in the days that follow. Overnight lows will also remain mild, limiting any cold-weather impacts.

The National Weather Service indicated dry conditions will persist, with no precipitation expected during the warming trend. Winds are forecast to remain manageable, supporting stable travel conditions.

For commuters, outdoor workers, and holiday travelers, the stretch of mild and dry weather should provide favorable conditions through Christmas, though residents are encouraged to stay aware of potential record temperatures as the week progresses.
