Amarillo, Texas – A major shift in weather arrives Friday as a strong cold front sweeps across the Texas Panhandle, replacing today’s near-record heat with fall-like temperatures. Afternoon highs, which reach the mid-90s Thursday, are expected to stay in the 60s to low 70s for most of Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the front pushes through late Thursday night into early Friday morning, dropping temperatures sharply by sunrise. There is a 30% to 70% chance that highs across the region, including Amarillo, Borger, and Pampa, will remain below 70 degrees through Friday.
The cooler air lingers into the weekend, with highs holding steady in the low to mid-70s and overnight lows dipping into the 50s. Increasing Gulf moisture will also bring a growing chance for showers and thunderstorms, especially Sunday into Monday, when rain odds rise to around 50% in places like Hereford, Guymon, and Dalhart.
Travelers should prepare for cooler, damp conditions by Saturday night and early next week. Officials recommend carrying rain gear and allowing extra time for commutes if storms develop.
