TEXAS PANHANDLE — Southwest winds are already picking up across the High Plains this morning, signaling a brief warm-up before a sharp December cooldown. By late afternoon, temperatures across Amarillo, Dalhart, and Pampa are expected to climb into the mid- to upper 50s, nearly average for early December — but it won’t last long.

The National Weather Service in Amarillo reports gusty southwest winds reaching 25 to 35 mph today will push mild air eastward before a strong cold front slams through late tonight into Wednesday. Behind the front, winds will shift abruptly out of the north, dragging in much colder air.

Highs Wednesday may struggle to reach the low 40s for many towns, and parts of the northern Panhandle could stay locked in the upper 30s all day. Forecasters note temperatures could fall even further if the front strengthens, and wind chills will likely dip into the 20s during the morning commute.

No snow is expected with this front, but driving visibility may briefly decrease in areas of blowing dust, especially along I-40, U.S. 287, and U.S. 87. Travelers should secure light outdoor items and brace for rapidly dropping temperatures by late evening Wednesday.
