PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – The desert heat in Southern California is peaking with life-threatening intensity, as temperatures soar up to 115 degrees in the Coachella Valley and San Diego County deserts through Tuesday evening. The National Weather Service warns this extreme heat could quickly lead to heat-related illnesses for anyone without adequate cooling or hydration.

According to the National Weather Service in San Diego, the Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday for Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Coachella, Indio, La Quinta, Borrego Springs, and the San Gorgonio Pass near Banning. Highs there will reach 110 to 115 degrees, with widespread “Major HeatRisk” conditions expected.

Officials urge residents to limit outdoor activity, drink plenty of fluids, and check on vulnerable neighbors and relatives. Those without access to air conditioning are advised to seek cooling centers, as car interiors can reach deadly temperatures within minutes. Pets and children should never be left in vehicles, even briefly.

The intense heat is expected to ease slightly by midweek, but triple-digit highs will likely persist in the deserts beyond Tuesday. Authorities caution that additional heat alerts could follow if conditions remain severe.
