Delray Beach, FL – A Delray Beach canine daycare owner is in custody today following an investigation into alleged aggravated animal cruelty involving a puppy left seriously injured earlier this year.

According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO), detectives with the Animal Crimes Unit arrested Jason Hershman on Wednesday after determining there was probable cause to charge him with aggravated animal cruelty under Florida law.

Investigators say the case began after Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control received multiple complaints from employees at Wanderlust Dogs, a canine daycare facility owned by Hershman. Employees reported concerns about a pattern of physical abuse toward dogs, prompting a formal investigation.

According to PBSO, the most serious incident occurred on May 8, 2025, involving a miniature poodle puppy named Cosmo. Detectives say Cosmo was healthy immediately before being left alone with Hershman. Shortly afterward, staff members reported hearing a loud cry and discovered the puppy bleeding from the mouth, shaking, and unable to stand normally.

Veterinary examinations conducted in the days following the incident revealed severe injuries, including a fractured premolar and a right-sided mandibular fracture. The injuries required multiple surgeries to repair.

According to investigators, both the treating veterinarian and an independent veterinary dental surgeon concluded Cosmo’s injuries were consistent with significant blunt force trauma. Authorities determined the puppy suffered severe and unnecessary pain as a result of Hershman’s alleged actions.

PBSO says Hershman was taken into custody today, Wednesday, December 17, 2025, and transported to the Palm Beach County Main Jail. Court records were not immediately available regarding a bond hearing or court appearance.

The investigation remains documented through the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Animal Crimes Unit.
