Paducah, Ky. – Dangerous heat and humidity will grip Kentucky through Tuesday, with daily highs near 100 degrees and heat indices pushing as high as 108, according to the National Weather Service in Paducah. The prolonged stretch of extreme heat has triggered a Heat Advisory for much of the region.
According to forecasters, isolated thunderstorms may pop up each afternoon, but the bigger threat remains the high heat index values, which can quickly cause heat-related illness for anyone outdoors too long. Temperatures are expected to reach the upper 90s in Paducah, Hopkinsville, and Murray, with overnight lows staying muggy in the mid to upper 70s.
Emergency officials urge residents to check on elderly or ill family members and limit strenuous activity to early morning or evening hours. Those without air conditioning are encouraged to seek cooling centers, as prolonged exposure in these conditions can be dangerous. Drivers are reminded never to leave children or pets in vehicles, even briefly, as interiors can become deadly within minutes.
Relief is expected by Wednesday when a cold front brings more widespread showers and storms, knocking temperatures back into the 80s. Until then, the Heat Advisory remains in place across western Kentucky.
