Paducah, Kentucky – Dangerously cold air continues to grip western Kentucky, creating hazardous conditions for drivers in and around Paducah as wind chills hover near zero along the I-64 corridor this morning. The bitter cold is increasing the risk of slick spots on roads, especially during early travel hours when refreezing is most likely.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, wind chills in the single digits and teens will persist into Tuesday morning, with some locations briefly dropping to zero or below before sunrise. Officials say the prolonged cold raises concerns for frostbite and hypothermia, while also allowing moisture on road surfaces to freeze quickly.
Major routes including I-24, I-69, and I-64 are vulnerable to icy patches on bridges, overpasses, and less-traveled ramps. Kentucky Transportation Cabinet crews are monitoring conditions, but extreme cold can reduce the effectiveness of road treatments. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra braking distance, and keep emergency supplies in their vehicles if travel is unavoidable.
Cold, dry, and breezy conditions linger through Tuesday, with wind chills remaining uncomfortable during the morning commute. Some moderation is expected midweek, but another push of colder air is possible later in the week. Additional advisories may be issued as conditions evolve.
