Paducah, KY – Fires that spark this afternoon could spread in minutes across parts of southeast Missouri and southern Illinois as dry air and gusty winds peak during the late-day hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. for counties including Cape Girardeau, Carbondale, and Poplar Bluff, where south winds of 13 to 18 mph with gusts up to 27 mph combine with relative humidity as low as 20 percent. These conditions create a fast-moving fire environment capable of jumping roadways and containment lines.
In Missouri, areas along U.S. 60 and Interstate 55 face the highest risk, especially in open fields and wooded corridors where dry vegetation acts as fuel. Southern Illinois communities, including Jackson and Williamson counties, may see similar rapid spread potential, prompting local emergency managers to discourage any outdoor burning.
Fire officials warn that even small sparks from equipment, cigarettes, or debris burning could ignite flames that quickly get out of control. Residents should secure trailer chains, avoid parking on dry grass, and delay any activities that could produce sparks.
The elevated threat will ease after sunset as winds weaken and humidity recovers, but additional advisories could follow if dry conditions persist into early next week.
