Pendleton, Oregon – Travel through the Blue Mountains is becoming increasingly difficult Friday as heavy mountain snow develops across eastern Oregon and southeastern Washington, impacting high-elevation routes and popular recreation areas through the evening hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until late tonight for the Northern Blue Mountains of Oregon and the Northwest Blue Mountains of Washington. Snowfall totals of 6 to 10 inches are expected above 3,500 feet, with periods of moderate to heavy snow making roads slick and visibility poor.
Areas near Meacham, Tollgate, and Ski Bluewood Resort are likely to see the most significant impacts, particularly along Interstate 84 through Deadman Pass and surrounding mountain highways. Snow-covered roads and reduced traction could slow traffic and lead to hazardous driving conditions, especially during heavier snowfall bursts later today.
Drivers heading through the mountains should plan for extra travel time, reduce speeds, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Chains or traction devices may be necessary at higher elevations. Those traveling for recreation should be prepared for winter conditions and limited access at trailheads and resorts.
Snow is expected to taper off later tonight as the system exits the region, though slick roads may linger overnight. Additional winter advisories are possible if snowfall intensifies or extends beyond this evening. Travelers are urged to check road conditions before heading into the mountains.
