Pendleton, OR – Post-holiday travel across the Washington Cascades could become hazardous Friday as mountain snow moves into the region, affecting several major highways and mountain routes.

According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, snow embedded within a Winter Storm Advisory is expected to develop Friday afternoon and continue through Friday night, bringing winter driving conditions to higher elevations and key transportation corridors.

The NWS says snowfall will impact travel along Interstate 90, U.S. Highway 12, and State Route 18, routes commonly used by drivers traveling between western and eastern Washington. While snowfall amounts will vary by elevation, conditions could deteriorate quickly during heavier bursts, especially during the evening hours.

Drivers should expect snow-covered roads, reduced visibility, and slick conditions, particularly through mountain passes and along exposed stretches of highway. Even modest snowfall can lead to significant slowdowns or temporary closures when traffic volumes increase during post-Christmas travel.

Transportation officials urge motorists to prepare for winter driving, including carrying chains where required, reducing speed, and allowing extra travel time. Travelers are also encouraged to check real-time road conditions through WSDOT’s website or mobile app before departing.

Snowfall is expected to taper late Friday night, but lingering impacts could continue into early Saturday, especially in shaded or higher-elevation areas.

Residents and travelers should continue monitoring updated forecasts and advisories as conditions evolve through the weekend.
