Portland, OR – The National Weather Service in Portland has issued a Gale Warning for the Oregon coastal waters and the Columbia River Bar, in effect from 5 p.m. Thursday until 2 p.m. Friday, following a Small Craft Advisory that remains active until this evening.

Forecasters warn of southerly winds from 20 to 30 knots with gusts up to 45 knots, and seas building to between 13 and 18 feet through Friday morning. The strongest conditions are expected tonight through early Friday, especially from Cape Shoalwater, WA to Florence, OR, both nearshore and offshore up to 60 nautical miles.

According to marine forecasters, hazardous seas and strong winds could capsize or damage smaller vessels and significantly reduce visibility. Mariners are strongly advised to avoid open waters and seek safe harbor before gale conditions develop.

At the Columbia River Bar, hazardous ebb currents combined with large swell could create extremely rough bar conditions, with waves reaching 15 feet or higher during peak periods.

The National Weather Service emphasizes that operating a vessel in these conditions requires advanced skill and properly equipped boats, urging less experienced mariners to remain in port until winds subside Friday afternoon.
