Portland, Ore. – Extreme heat continues to grip the Pacific Northwest, with temperatures running dangerously high through at least Tuesday and little relief expected overnight. Health officials warn the combination of daytime highs and persistently warm nights could significantly increase the risk of heat-related illness across Oregon and Washington.

According to the National Weather Service, heat risk levels remain in the major to extreme category for much of western Oregon, western Washington, and interior valleys. Unlike in the Southwest, where conditions may ease by Sunday, the Pacific Northwest will see the heat stretch well into midweek. Nighttime lows in Portland, Seattle, and Spokane are expected to stay far above normal, preventing the body from recovering after long hours of daytime heat.

Cities across the region are urging residents to take precautions, including limiting outdoor activity, drinking extra water, and checking on vulnerable neighbors. Cooling centers remain open in Portland and King County, while utilities are asking customers to reduce electricity use during peak hours to avoid strain on the grid.

Officials warn that the prolonged nature of this heat wave makes it especially dangerous, with heat advisories likely to remain in effect until at least Tuesday.
