HONOLULU, Hawaii — Pacific tsunami experts said Friday that Hawaii and nearby U.S. territories face no danger following the strong 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Mindanao, Philippines.

According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, the quake’s depth and offshore distance prevented a destructive wave from forming. Early notices were issued for monitoring purposes, but all were canceled within hours.

“There is no tsunami threat to Hawaii,” officials said in a statement, noting that minor sea-level oscillations could occur in parts of Micronesia and Palau. The center classified the message as informational only.

Local emergency agencies urged residents to maintain situational awareness, particularly mariners operating in Pacific waters, but confirmed no evacuation or coastal closure was needed.
