Springfield, Mo. – Strong to marginally severe thunderstorms could sweep across southwest Missouri Friday afternoon and evening, bringing the threat of damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and pockets of localized flooding.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, the greatest impacts are expected between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. Friday, especially across areas from Joplin to Rolla, including Springfield, Lebanon, and Branson. Isolated storms may also bring frequent lightning and torrential downpours capable of triggering flash flooding in low-lying areas.
Cities including Nevada, West Plains, and Poplar Bluff remain under a marginal risk zone, while communities farther north near Kansas City fall under a slight risk of severe storms. The storms could disrupt evening commutes along I-44 and U.S. 60, with visibility reduced in heavy rain and strong wind gusts making travel hazardous.
Residents are urged to remain weather aware, secure outdoor items, and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Lightning may be frequent, and sudden downpours could overwhelm drainage systems, especially in urban areas.
Storms are expected to weaken overnight, but additional updates and alerts may be issued if conditions worsen. Stay tuned to NWS Springfield and local emergency channels for the latest information.
