Springfield, Missouri – Temperatures will dip just low enough overnight to trigger widespread frost across southern Missouri, with readings near 31°F developing before sunrise Sunday and threatening early-season vegetation.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, a Frost Advisory is in effect from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday, covering much of southwest and central Missouri along with parts of southeast Kansas. Cities including Springfield, Joplin, Rolla, Lebanon, and West Plains are all within the advisory zone as clear skies allow heat to escape quickly overnight.

The coldest window is expected between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m., when sheltered valleys and rural areas—from the Ozarks to communities near Lake of the Ozarks like Camdenton and Osage Beach—could briefly fall to or just below freezing. Urban centers like Springfield and Joplin may stay a few degrees warmer but can still see patchy frost on exposed surfaces.

Gardeners and homeowners should cover sensitive plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and protect outdoor plumbing in colder pockets. Even mid-30s temperatures can produce frost under calm conditions.

Temperatures will rebound after 9 a.m. Sunday, but additional cold mornings remain possible into early next week as spring warmth struggles to fully settle in.
