Springfield, Mo. – Strong to severe thunderstorms could impact Missouri late Wednesday as a cold front slides through the region, with the greatest risk north of Interstate 44. Hail up to an inch in diameter and damaging wind gusts reaching 60 mph are the main concerns.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, storms are expected from this afternoon into late evening, especially near communities such as Nevada, Clinton, and Harrisonville. Drivers along I-44 and secondary highways may face sudden downpours, making travel hazardous during the evening commute.

Emergency managers urge residents to secure outdoor items that could blow away in high winds and to move vehicles under cover to reduce hail damage. Power outages are possible if gusty winds down trees or utility lines.

A second cold front will approach Friday, bringing another round of showers and thunderstorms across southern and central Missouri. Behind it, drier and cooler weather is expected, with weekend highs in the upper 70s and lows in the 50s.

Warnings remain in effect through Wednesday evening, and additional alerts may be issued ahead of Friday’s storm system.
