SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A surge of warm, humid air will give way to a sharp fall change this weekend as a strong cold front sweeps across the Ozarks, bringing widespread rain and thunderstorms from late Friday through Saturday night. Some storms could become strong to severe, especially Saturday afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, highs will stay well above average through Friday, reaching the lower to mid-80s across much of southern Missouri and southeastern Kansas. The cold front will approach the area Friday night, triggering scattered storms that may intensify into Saturday as daytime heating increases. Damaging winds and heavy rainfall are the main threats, though small hail is also possible.

The greatest storm risk is expected along and east of U.S. Highway 65, including Springfield, Branson, and West Plains. Rain chances will taper off late Saturday night as cooler, drier air pours into the region. By Sunday, highs will fall back into the mid-60s, bringing a more seasonable October feel after several days of warmth.

Drivers and outdoor event planners should stay alert for changing weather conditions late Friday into Saturday evening. The NWS advises residents to secure loose items, review severe weather safety plans, and monitor updates for potential watches or warnings.
