Springfield, MO – Residents across southwest Missouri should prepare for multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms through Friday, with the heaviest rainfall expected midweek.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, storms developing today could bring general rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches through Monday night, with localized areas seeing higher amounts. Additional rounds of rain are forecast Tuesday through Thursday, raising the risk of localized flooding despite ongoing drought conditions in parts of the Ozarks.
Forecasters noted that “training” thunderstorms—where storms repeatedly move across the same locations—may intensify the flooding risk, especially in low-lying and urban areas. Counties including Greene, Christian, Taney, and Pulaski are highlighted in the forecast map as areas most likely to see higher rainfall totals.
The heaviest rain potential appears Tuesday through Thursday, when slow-moving systems could bring widespread showers and embedded strong storms. Motorists are urged to use caution on roadways, as heavy downpours may quickly reduce visibility and create ponding.
NWS officials stress that while the rainfall will provide relief to drought-stricken areas, residents should remain alert for flood advisories or warnings issued later this week.
