Springfield, Missouri – Triple-digit heat and suffocating humidity continue to grip southwest Missouri through Wednesday, with heat index values climbing as high as 114°F and minimal relief expected overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect through 8 p.m. Wednesday, impacting most of southern Missouri. Afternoon highs are forecast to reach between 93°F and 98°F, with “feels-like” temperatures peaking above 110°F in several counties including Greene, Christian, Laclede, and Howell.
The heat poses a significant health risk, especially for outdoor workers, the elderly, and those without air conditioning. Officials urge residents to stay indoors during peak heat hours, check on vulnerable neighbors, and never leave children or pets in vehicles. Heat exhaustion, dehydration, and heat stroke are all possible, particularly with nighttime lows remaining in the upper 70s.
A few isolated thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and again Wednesday night, mainly across the eastern Ozarks, bringing a brief chance for relief. A stronger cold front is expected late Thursday, gradually cooling conditions into the low 80s by Friday.
Warnings remain in effect through Wednesday, and more updates may be issued as conditions evolve.
