Springfield, Mo. – A soggy and stormy Memorial Day weekend is ahead for much of Missouri, with up to 8 inches of rain and strong thunderstorms expected to impact travel and outdoor plans through Monday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, a Flood Watch goes into effect at 7 p.m. Friday and remains active until 7 p.m. Monday across most of southern and central Missouri. Rainfall totals between 2 to 5 inches are likely, with localized amounts near 8 inches possible in southwest counties like Barry, Christian, and Taney. Already saturated soils will increase the flash flooding risk.

Isolated severe thunderstorms may also develop Friday and Saturday, especially near the Four Corners region, bringing large hail up to 1 inch and damaging winds of 60 mph. Cities including Springfield, Joplin, and West Plains are under a level 1 to 2 risk for severe weather depending on the day.

Temperatures will remain cool, ranging from the upper 60s to low 70s across the state. Holiday travelers should prepare for road closures, rising creek levels, and campground hazards. Avoid low-lying areas and never drive through flooded roads.

The Flood Watch stays in effect until Monday evening, and additional warnings or advisories may follow if storms persist into next week.
