Ovid Township, MI – A single-vehicle crash early Saturday sent a car into Coldwater Lake after a driver reportedly missed a rural intersection.

According to the Branch County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched around 12:18 a.m. Saturday to the intersection of Centennial Road and Warren Road in Ovid Township after reports that a vehicle had driven into the lake.

Investigators said a 19-year-old woman from Benton Harbor was traveling south on Centennial Road when she allegedly failed to stop at the Warren Road intersection.

The vehicle, identified as a 2019 Nissan Versa, continued south past the intersection and struck an outdoor fireplace and a boat lift near the shoreline before entering Coldwater Lake and overturning, authorities said.

The driver was able to exit the vehicle and was transported by police to Insight Hospital in Coldwater for treatment of minor injuries and possible hypothermia, according to the sheriff’s office.

Emergency responders worked at the lakeside scene overnight as the vehicle was recovered from the water.

The Branch County Sheriff’s Office said multiple agencies assisted during the response, including the Lakeland Fire Department, Michigan State Police, Branch County Central Dispatch, and VIP Auto and Recovery.

Authorities have not released additional details about what may have caused the driver to miss the stop sign. The incident remains under investigation.

Rural intersections like those along Centennial Road are frequently used by late-night commuters and young drivers traveling between nearby communities.
