Raleigh, NC – More than 6 million residents across North Carolina and South Carolina are under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 10 p.m. Monday, as damaging storms sweep the region.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, clusters of thunderstorms are expected to push eastward through central and southern North Carolina and northeast South Carolina throughout Monday evening. The strongest storms may produce scattered damaging wind gusts reaching up to 70 mph, posing risks to trees, powerlines, and unsecured outdoor objects.

Cities under the watch include Raleigh, Fayetteville, Winston-Salem, Myrtle Beach, and Florence. Frequent lightning and isolated hail up to the size of quarters are also possible. The watch zone spans roughly 75 miles on either side of a line from northeast of Raleigh to southeast of Florence, SC.

Officials urge residents to remain weather-aware, secure outdoor belongings, and be ready to act if warnings are issued. Motorists should be cautious of sudden gusts and rapidly changing conditions during commutes.

Preparedness tips include staying indoors during storms, avoiding tall objects and open fields, and having flashlights ready in case of power outages. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or local news for real-time updates.
