Chicago, IL – Strong winds sweeping through northern Illinois Wednesday evening left over 13,000 customers without power.
High wind gusts, reaching up to 50 mph, prompted a wind advisory issued by the National Weather Service. Power outages spanned across counties including Cook, Lake, and McHenry, affecting residential and commercial properties alike. The outages were reported around 8 p.m. as the wind intensified, snapping tree branches and downing power lines.
According to ComEd’s outage map, 428 active outages were affecting a total of 13,048 customers as of Wednesday evening. Crews were dispatched to restore power, though officials warned repairs could extend into Thursday due to hazardous conditions.
The National Weather Service advised residents to secure loose objects and avoid unnecessary travel, as gusts made driving treacherous for high-profile vehicles. Areas across central and northeast Illinois faced similar conditions, with impacts extending into northwest Indiana.
Residents experiencing outages should report them to ComEd and prepare for prolonged disruptions. Flashlights, backup power sources, and caution around downed power lines are strongly recommended.
Stay updated by monitoring weather alerts and checking ComEd’s outage map regularly for restoration updates.
