Ottawa County, MI – The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its push to protect residents from fraud with a series of free financial scam prevention classes this fall. The initiative, aimed primarily at seniors, offers practical tips for spotting and avoiding scams that increasingly target older adults across West Michigan.

According to the National Sheriffs’ Association, the outreach program—led by Detective Joe Monger—features 90-minute sessions covering topics such as technology scams, romance scams, government impersonators, and social media risks. Each session helps residents learn how to identify red flags, secure personal information, and report suspicious activity.

The classes require no registration and are open to the public. Upcoming sessions include:

  • Oct. 22, 2 p.m. at Waterford Place, 1725 Port Sheldon St., Jenison
  • Nov. 5, 6:30 p.m. at the Ottawa County Administration Building, 12220 Fillmore St., West Olive

Organizers say the program has already reached hundreds of attendees since its launch earlier this year, drawing strong community engagement and positive feedback.

Residents are encouraged to attend and share the information with family members who may be vulnerable to scams.
