Oneonta, NY – Drivers in Otsego County have less than a day to prepare as a Winter Storm Watch calls for up to 9 inches of snow starting Sunday afternoon, threatening to coat Interstate 88 and local hills before the Monday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, heavy snow could begin Sunday afternoon and continue through Monday evening. Forecasters expect total accumulations between 6 and 9 inches across Otsego County, with wind gusts up to 35 mph. While blowing snow is not expected to be widespread, gusty winds could still create reduced visibility on open stretches and exposed roadways.

Roads in and around Oneonta, including I-88, Route 23 and Route 7, may quickly become slick as snowfall intensifies. Bridges and overpasses are likely to freeze first, increasing the risk of spinouts and slowdowns. Snow-covered secondary roads and steep hills could make travel especially difficult during both the Monday morning and evening commutes.

Residents should consider delaying non-essential travel from Sunday afternoon through Monday evening. Drivers who must head out should allow extra stopping distance, avoid sudden braking and ensure vehicles are winter-ready with full fuel tanks and emergency kits.

The watch remains in effect through Monday evening, and additional advisories or warnings could be issued as the storm track and snowfall totals become clearer.
