Watertown, NY – A significant midweek winter storm may bring heavy snow to the Eastern Lake Ontario region beginning late Tuesday night, with accumulations likely to affect travel throughout Wednesday and into Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Buffalo, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from late Tuesday night through Thursday morning for Oswego, Jefferson, and Lewis Counties, including Oswego, Watertown, and Lowville.

Forecasters say 7 inches of snow or more are possible, especially across higher-elevation areas, including the Tug Hill Plateau and the western foothills of the Adirondacks. These areas are particularly prone to enhanced snowfall when cold air passes over Lake Ontario, and meteorologists expect bands of heavier snow to develop during the day Wednesday.

Travel may become very difficult, with snow-covered roads and stretches of reduced visibility. The Wednesday morning and evening commutes are expected to be affected, especially along major routes such as I-81, Route 12, and Route 3. Motorists should be prepared for sudden changes in road conditions, drifting snow, and possible travel delays.

NWS officials encourage residents to begin preparations now, ensuring vehicles are winter-ready and household supplies are adequate in case travel becomes restricted. Road conditions may deteriorate quickly during periods of heavier snowfall.

As the system evolves, forecasters will continue refining accumulation projections and timing. Residents should monitor updated forecasts for the latest information.
